![]() It amazes me that the devs have managed to only usually add one new enemy per game, then it’s not in the next one, but there is a new one to take its place. If there’s one thing that gets super annoying real fast, is the true lack of enemy design in the games. But at least all the weapons, minus the pistol, have the ability to just gib the enemies and turn them into a bloody puddle! Unlike say Doom or Duke Nukem, where those guns all felt super satisfying to use. ![]() The only weapon that felt like it really had any stopping power was the minigun, and even then, the ammo for it was scarce and only really in areas that it was clearly designed for. Even heavy weapons like the rocket launcher don’t kill as fast as I would’ve liked them too. The guns in the game honestly don’t feel like they have any oomf to them. Though the third game has better level design, now and again it does have arenas in it, but they’re usually pretty large areas. This is fun at first, but after three full games and two little DLCs, it starts to wear a little thin. The levels weren’t really that big, but there were still a couple hundred enemies in every level. The first game was especially bad for arenas. When it comes to the game, you better get used to killing hordes upon hordes of enemies as you get stuck into arenas in every level of all of the games. Even when he’s faced with the most messed up aliens, he just shrugs it off and rips its limbs off! Sam acts like an old school badass, where even when a helicopter gets downed, he walks away unscathed. It never goes that deep, and honestly makes no sense, but at least it’s some sort of driving force to get you through it all. The third game is the one that has the most story though. ![]() Though you can see the story in the third game. I mean there isn’t much there to begin with, but it’s such a stupid thing to have happen. The downside is that if you play the first two games in co-op, you don’t get to see any of the story in them. On the plus side, you can play all the games in co-op, whether it’s online or couch co-op. The story in the first two games is really bareboned. Although it happens more than once, and my god there are way too many pyramids! In the same way that having similar budgets and interests are key criteria, having similar body clocks will also help both of you have a good time when you’re away. Knowing this is really important when it comes to choosing a travel buddy. Whatever it is, make sure there is plenty of common ground so that you are able to enjoy things together during your trip without constantly feeling like your time is being compromised.Īre you an early riser or a serial night owl? Sure you don’t have to do everything the same (see tip #7), but it is a good idea when choosing a travel buddy to make sure a lot of your interests overlap.ĭo you both like outdoor adventure for example? If your friend’s idea of a good holiday is simply to lie on the beach all day, while you’d be bored out of your mind doing this, then you may want to reconsider your partner options! Sharing similar interests is also crucial when it comes to choosing a travel buddy that you’re compatible with. talking about how much you each have and how much you each expect to spend, will definitely give you a good sense about whether somebody will be right for you travel with. ![]() It's hard to put effectively into words but one example is ***BEGIN SPOILER*** when the Chief crashes on the ring he exits the escape pod, crosses a small bridge and takes cover from Banshees in some rocks ***END SPOILER*** and this is exactly what I did when playing that level in the game! I found many examples of this while listening to the story and that added something that those who didn't play the game or don't remember it as well as I do wouldn't get out of it. This meant that instead of my brain manufacturing images of the story as it does with most novels, I was able to fit the story around my memories of the game's levels. The reason this is significant is that while going through the events of the story I knew exactly where the Chief was within each of the game's levels. I'm more familiar with the level design of that game than any other Halo game and quite a lot of other games that have come since. The greatest aspect of this novel for me though is that gaming has always been my main source of entertainment and I played Halo: CE extensively back in the day, again when it had it's Xbox 360 re-release and yet again as part of the Master Chief Collection. What the novel brings to the table that the game never could are the thoughts of the characters, the conversations between secondary characters, the perspective on events from the Covenant, plenty of minor details that couldn't be covered by the game as well as a whole host of events and occurrences that weren't even in the game, many of which don't involve Cortana or the Master Chief at all. ![]() I can understand how many people would think that creating a novel around the game would lead to an inferior novel and maybe that is the case from a purely novel perspective but here's the benefit. The Pros While it's true that this is simply the novel of the first game I still think there's a lot to recommend it for. I wanted it to end.Įxcellent for fans of Halo: Combat Evolved I hope the next one is better, this was bad. As American gung-ho as it could possibly get (and nothing wrong with that - but moderation please) verging from cliché to parody, to boring derivative. It’s all just blood-soaked plasma cannons. Never a real combat moment where skill could be used…. It is spinning to give artificial gravity, so why gravity plates? It seemingly also has a moon? How? The main protagonist Spartan C117 ‘John’ is now not limited by anything really, he never has ammunition lacking, has multiple weapons always in grip and everywhere he goes he just ‘blasts his way out, and avoids all the falling meat’. Halo itself is described as a gigantic ring-world, or Orbital as Iain M Banks would have described it. I know the ‘story-line’ probably needs to follow the computer game sequence, but this needed to have a level of complexity and story depth. This second story is 1 dimensional at best, where you have no engagement or care about any of the ‘people’ or even the previously witty and snarky Cortana - the ship or suit AI. The first story in the HALO series, gave character, background and some level of interpersonal relationships, making for a lightweight but enjoyable listen. Built 100,00 years ago by a long-lost civilization known as the Forerunners, this “Halo” is worshiped by the Covenant - a sacred artifact they hope will complete their religious quest for supposed transcendence, and they will stop at nothing to control it.Įngaging in fierce combat, Master Chief and Cortana will go deep into the Halo construct and uncover its dark secret and true purpose - even as a monstrous and far more vicious enemy than the Covenant emerges to threaten all sentient life on Halo and the galaxy beyond. The crew’s only hope of survival is to crash-land on its surface and take the battle opposing the Covenant to the ground.īut they soon discover that this enigmatic ringworld is much more than it seems. In this far-flung corner of the universe floats a magnificently massive, artificial ringworld. But their destination brings them to an ancient mystery and an even greater struggle. Having barely escaped the final battle for Reach against the vast alien alliance known as the Covenant, the crew of the Pillar of Autumn, including Spartan John-117 - the Master Chief - and his AI companion Cortana, is forced to make a desperate escape into slipspace. Read the wiki page on powrr combos and understand it. So you basically need to play around the strategy of low cooldowns and high damage powers. Tips for 3: The damage scaling of power combos gets BETTER as the difficulty gets higher. Do every available sidequest before you have completed the first 4 recruitment missions (Mordin, Garrus, Jack, Grunt)- this will allow you to be the highest level possible before the Collector Ship, which is the hardest level in the game. There are some straight up unfair missions in this game, so just get used to looking up whether you need a shield-stripping or armor-stripping comp before heading into a mission. Tips for 2: This game on Insanity is 99% about stripping shield/armor/barrier, so prioritize upgrading Incinerate, Overload, Warp, and their corresponding ammo powers. Early game (like before you've left the Citadel the first time) this will be tough, but once you hit level 20 (classic scaling) your squad will be unbeatable. Your basic strategy is just to crowd control as many people as possible and blast them with guns and Overload. You don't ever need to upgrade your weapons if you don't want- on LE it is perfectly valid to be an Adept using an Assault Rifle the whole game. Tips for 1: Have more than 1 character on your squad who can use Biotics at all times (except for the mission on Luna) and one person to be your hacker. Most of the time, you'll barely notice a difference, but there are a few fights where if you don't have the right setup beforehand it can be downright impossible - (I'm looking at you Collector Ship).
